The Hampden neighborhood in Baltimore has been partially gentrified over the past two decades. Many of the native residents have been pushed to the background. Their presence is still acknowledged by some but mostly ignored by newcomers.
Shortly after beginning to photograph these residents and the remnants they left behind, a member of my immediate family died by suicide. This loss left a lingering cloud of guilt and regret, creating a lasting shift in how I look at the world. My gaze had shifted.
